Which Funds Are Best For You?
The SBIR program funds small businesses to develop innovations that meet federal research needs or open new commercial markets, with each agency focusing on different priorities. The National Science Foundation (NSF) supports early-stage, high-risk ideas across fields like biotechnology, AI, and advanced materials, making it ideal for science-driven startups exploring breakthrough technologies.
The Department of Energy (DOE) emphasizes clean energy, climate, and infrastructure solutions, while the Department of Defense (DoD) supports applied innovations with dual-use potential such as sensors or AI systems.
Health-related innovators often align with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or NIEHS for medical, diagnostic, or environmental research. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) focus on sustainability and applied environmental challenges. NSF and DOE are best for early, high-risk ideas, while DoD and NIH suit projects with more developed prototypes or clinical applications
